Current Fine Arts Program Offerings

CREATE WITH CLAY! FOR KIDS

Let’s get messy in the art room! Explore the magic of clay and learn the basic techniques of building and creating fun creatures and objects. We will be making multiple projects to be fired and glazed right here at the Kroc, and after the session students will be able to take their work home. Creativity is encouraged.

OPEN CLAY STUDIO (AGES 16+)

Join us in our studio for a time of creating and exploring. Enjoy working with other creatives to make fun projects throughout the session. Come as you are as a newbie or seasoned artist to play with clay. Materials and tools provided, clay is limited per student based on the session. Projects will be fired and glazed to be picked up the week after class ends.

MUSIC LESSONS

Join our small group music lessons with one of our wonderful music instructors. Students will work together and independently to learn or perfect current skills, technique and knowledge of their chosen instrument. All skill levels welcome.

BEGINNER BALLET

Does your little one love to move? This class is a fun introduction to ballet fundamentals to improve balance, coordination and rhythm. Dancers will learn basic stretching, technique and term to plié into ballet.

TUMBLING

Your child will learn basic tumbling skills to roll into the world of dance. Increasing flexibility and technique with somersaults, bridge, backbend, and handstands.

In April 2019, the Kroc Center launched our first session of FAME (Fine Arts, Music & Expression) with students from Brookside Elementary School. For six weeks, 4th and 5th grade students visited the Kroc Center once a week to focus on art, music, and dance. Students worked toward an end-of-session performance, as well as a gallery showing in conjunction with their showcase. Read more…

Current Educational Program Offerings

BABYSITTER TRAINING (AGES 11+)

Build your babysitting résumé with this American Red Cross class. Students gain the knowledge and confidence to care for children and learn to respond to emergencies and illnesses with first aid. They also learn how to administer and become certified in CPR and other appropriate care, recognize safety and hygiene issues, care for infants and communicate with parents. Pizza lunch and snack are provided.

WATERPARK LIFEGUARD TRAINING & CERTIFICATION (AGES 15+)

This course provides the necessary knowledge and skills to become a professional lifeguard. Lifeguard candidates will learn how to prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatic emergencies, and provide care for breathing, cardiac, and first aid emergencies until EMS personnel can take over. Training includes in–water and on–land scenarios, videos, and discussion. Upon successful completion of a practical skills test, and a score of 80% or higher on the written exams, participants will receive a two–year Waterpark Lifeguard / First Aid / CPR/AED certification. The Lifeguard Participant Manual is provided. Attendance is required during entire course. Scholarships may be available for individuals who agree to work at the Kroc Center.

PREREQUISITE: Candidates must pass the pre-course skills test consisting of 300–yard continuous swim using a combination of front crawl and breaststroke, two minutes of treading water without using hands, and a brick test, which requires swimming 20 yards without goggles to retrieve a 10-pound brick from the bottom of the deep end, and kicking 20 yards back with it within one minute and 40 seconds. The pre–course skills test is performed at the start of class on the first day.
All dates each session equal one class. Online coursework is required prior to attending the in–person portion of the class. on will be emailed from the American Red Cross before the class begins.

Alyson Rodriguez

Education Supervisor

Alyson Rodriguez completed her Masters in Fine Arts (Painting) from Kendall College of Art and Design in 2019. She has worked in Fine Arts Education in Michigan and North Carolina since graduating with her Bachelors in Fine Arts in 2010, and has exhibited her work throughout West Michigan. She has worked at the Grand Rapids Kroc Center in various capacities since 2012 and currently serves as Fine Arts Coordinator and as an Art Instructor.
